D-CD204:Performance and Cultural Theory in Asia
Tuesdays 2.45pm-4.45pm | Wednesdays 9-11am

Description
This module traces histories of traditional dance forms in Asia and their impact on present-day contemporary dance expression. It will guide you to reflect on and investigate your own relationship to Asia and Asian identities. Samples from specific cultures and choreographers from Asia, and particularly South-east Asia will be selected for closer study . You will engage with a number of theoretical debates around contemporary dance practice including Inter-cultural theories, Post-colonialism, structuralism and poststructuralism through which issues of gender, race, body and psyche are explored. The lessons will include both seminar-style conversations and studio-based explorations where theory will be placed alongside contemporary choreography. This module then develops this exploration by discussing ideas of identity, culture, and translation. You are taught to relate these explorations to your own development as culturally based artists and question your influence on your personal dance practices.
