This module introduces you to the fundamentals of the heritage field, interrogating the meaning of culture and heritage from both a Singapore-specific and global perspective. It covers the international management of heritage through the instruments of local, regional or global agencies and public institutions, like UNESCO, and examines mechanisms of safeguarding and preserving heritage sites and objects in both physical and digital environments. From conflicting stakeholders to the role of the community, the module discusses and analyses the challenges of managing heritage on local and global levels. Building on-site visits and direct engagement with heritage professionals, the module exposes you to existing and emerging complexities and critical issues in the heritage field. It equips you with foundational knowledge and skills to discern, manage and preserve tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
